About the Skipper

Gerard Marín started out sailing small boats. From 2002 to 2006, he took part in Europe class regattas obtaining some great results becoming Spanish champion twice in 2002 and 2006, and was runner up in the 2002 world championship. He entered the Mini class in 2006 with the GAES Solidaria team, which marked a tuning point in his career, as he took the decision to become a full-time ocean racer.

The 2006 season was exceptional with wins in the Mini Solo, the Mini Barcelona and the Les Sables-Azores-Les Sables. In 2007, he once again won the Mini Solo, finished second in the Lions Race and fourth in the Transat 6.50, which he was to take part in again in 2009.

In 2008, Gerard Marín sailed for the first time in the IMOCA class aboard Educacion Sin Fronteras, on a 170 mile race between Barcelona and Ibiza. In May 2010, he was contacted by the Fundació NavegacióOceànicaBarcelona(FNOB)to take part in the Barcelona World Race, his first round the world race. A giant leap forward in his career and a huge challenge for the young Spanish skipper who is making his real entry into IMOCA racing. For this challenge he can count on the support of an experienced co-skipper, Ludovic Aglaor, who is sixteen years older than him. The Franco-Spanish crew sailing aboard Fòrum Marítim Català (FMC), complement each other well.

About the Boat

Designed by the Owen-Clarke Design team and launched in 2000 in New Zealand, Fòrum Marítim Català is Ellen MacArthur’s former Kingfisher. It was on board this boat that the British heroine took second place in the 2000-2001 Vendée Globe before winning the EDS Challenge in 2001 and the 2002 Route du Rhum. The boat was then decked out in the colours of Educacion Sin Fronteras for the first edition of the Barcelona World Race. In the hands of the Spanish sailor Albert Bargués and the young French woman, Servane Escoffier, the boat finished in fifth place.
