This morning we heard the sad news of the death of the 36-year old British sailor and double Olympic medallist in 2008 and 2012, Andrew Simpson, during the capsize of the catamaran Artemis Racing, aboard which he was training in San Francisco Bay with a view to the 34th America’s Cup.
“It is with immense sadness that Artemis Racing confirms the tragic death of crew member Andrew “Bart” Simpson today (Thursday) in San Francisco,” indicated the Swedish team on its website. “He was one of the 11-man crew aboard Artemis Racing’s AC72 (catamaran type) when it capsized.”
"Simpson was trapped under the boat and despite attempts to revive him by doctors at sea and on land, he lost his life,” continues the press release from Artemis, which quotes the boss of the Swedish challenge, American Paul Cayard.
The whole IMOCA class today addresses its deepest sympathies to Andrew’s wife and family.
