‘Brave New Ocean' a high-level virtual event organised by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO on Wednesday 3rd February, aims to highlight the immense challenges and opportunities related to the Ocean.

A favourable context for the launch of a decade of hope?

While our sailors left a chaotic and uncertain world in November 2020, the month of January 2021 will undoubtedly mark the beginning of what will be perhaps the most important decade of our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered economic and social crises around the world, and many are counting on the growth of the green economy to put us on the road to recovery. But what about the sustainable blue economy?

In marking the launch of the United Nations' massive commitment to our blue planet, 2021 is already a "super year" for the Ocean. The United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development is a major global initiative to increase our scientific knowledge of the sea and create the ocean we need.

The goal is to generate the knowledge we need to achieve a world where biodiversity flourishes and where the ocean plays a central role in the search for sustainable and equitable development of our planet as we face the realities of climate change.

High-profile speakers and program

Brave New Ocean' will bring together world leaders from governments, the philanthropic world and United Nations agencies, as well as some of the world's leading oceanographers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will open the session, followed by Audrey Azoulay, General Director of UNESCO. Distinguished guests such as Wendy Schmidt, philanthropist and investor, President of the Schmidt Family Foundation and 11th Hour, as well as Prince Albert II of Monaco will be present to answer the question of the essential role of the Oceans.

Alexia Barrier and Boris Herrmann, Ocean ambassadors skippers, committed for many years around acting and preserving their playground, will speak about their commitment but also testify about their experience and their actions during the Vendée Globe.

The event will be peppered by video presentations and live debates, which will examine the key stages of this 10-year odyssey to improve the state of the Ocean.

The first half of the event will highlight the exceptional work already done to identify concrete ways in which a healthy and resilient Ocean can contribute to a blue recovery in a post-COVID-19 world. The second half will look at how to bring together Ocean stakeholders from all generations and continents to create the Ocean we need. The founding members of the Ocean Science Decade Alliance will also affirm their commitment to the ocean for the next 10 years.
