Skipper NameAlex Pella (088pts)
About the Skipper
Originally from Barcelona, Alex Pella is one of a family with four brothers, who are all professional sailors. In 1999, his experience preparing two Spanish boats taking part in the Solitaire du Figaro confirmed his passion for solo sailing. In particular, he has taken part three times in the Transat 6,50. Third in 2003, he came second in 2005 after a brilliant Atlantic crossing between Lanzarote and Salvador da Bahía. In 2007, when he last took part, he was forced to retire after his boat was dismasted.
A good all-rounder and experienced at preparing boats, Alex Pella has sailed on a variety of craft throughout his career and has acquired a solid experience in the IMOCA class. In 2009, he finished fifth in the Transat Jacques, alongside Pepe Ribes. More recently aboard Estrella Damm, he won the duel against W Hotels in the NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record, a new ocean challenge between New York and Barcelona. Then, during the first edition of the Round Spain sailing race, Alex Pella and his crew kept the pressure up on the leading boats in the IMOCA class finishing third in theoverall rankings, just behind Safran and PRB.
For the Barcelona World Race, Alex was back with Pepe Ribes on board Estrella Damm, the former Paprec-Virbac 2. They took a brilliant 4th behind two other Spanish crews MAPFRE and Renault ZE.
