Skipper NameDee Caffari (072pts)
About the Skipper
Dee Caffari has not followed the traditional path for a sailor. After working for five years as a physical education teacher, she decided it was time for a career change and took to the sea. She joined up with Mike Golding’s shore team for the 2000-2001 Vendée Globe. Then, in 2004-2005, she became skipper of the Global Challenge one design boat, leading a crew of seventeen around the world.
In 2006, the British sailor became the first woman to sail non-stop solo around the world in the “wrong” direction, ensuring her name would enter the history books. Once she had achieved this, Dee Caffari started looking around for other projects. She bought Mike Golding’s former boat, which she knew really well after preparing her, and declared her intention to take part in the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe. She finished in sixth place, becoming the only woman to have sailed alone around the world non stop in both directions.
In April 2011, Dee successfully completed another circumnavigation, this time with a Spanish co- skipper Anna Corbella. On completion of the Barcelona World Race Dee became the only woman to have sailed three times around the world non-stop.
Dee continues to hold the female crewed monohull Round Britain and Ireland Speed Record set in June 2009 at 6 days 11 hours 30 minutes and 53 seconds.
She intends to take part in the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe with the clear aim of finishing on the podium.
