About the Skipper

Javier Sanso, nicknamed Bubi, is back to compete again in the Vendée Globe. He is someone that will need to be watched closely. At the start of the 2000-2001 solo non-stop round the world race, the Spanish skipper did not have what it took to be up with the frontrunners, as he was sailing aboard an older boat that had been launched back in 1992. This first attempt ended with him being forced to retire after suffering damage to his rudder.

In 2012 it will be a different story, as he will have at his disposal a brand new Owen Clarke designed boat built in New Zealand. This could be a lethal weapon in the hands of this accomplished sailor, who apart from taking part in the Vendée Globe, has lined-up three times at the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre and completed the 2007-2008 Barcelona World Race finishing in fourth place.

The sailor from Majorca can therefore boast some success sailing double-handed, but now wants to show what he can do sailing solo. The 2012-2013 Vendée Globe will offer him the chance to compete alongside the best. If he manages to complete the race, Javier Sanso will become the second Spaniard to achieve such a performance, following on José De Ugarte back in 1992-1993. But we can be certain that this is not his only goal...
