Getting back onto a single-handed cycle

Winner of the Transat Jacques Vabre in the MOD 70 category, Charles Caudrelier reviews the IMOCA race and his plans within the class.
“The IMOCA 60 race wasn’t easy to follow, due to the rhythm we’d set ourselves aboard our MOD 70 and also because we were only receiving the positions from our class. However, I did manage to follow the race by consulting the cartography on the website whenever I got the chance. I saw that there was a real battle going on within the group of leaders who were evenly matched. I’m now waiting for a chance to chat with the competitors to get an idea from them about where the differences were made, etc. It’s very important for me as a racer to get the maximum amount of information from the people who’ve done the sailing because you can never learn enough... Indeed it was very interesting chatting with Pascal Bidegorry in particular, who sailed a very fine race with Marc Guillemot on a well-optimised older generation boat… All these discussions are very important for me as I’m currently in search of partners for my Vendée Globe project in 2016. I’d really like to participate in the next Route du Rhum too, even on a fairly old boat, just to gain experience of sailing single-handed. It’s been several years now that I’ve been focusing on crewed or double-handed sailing, so I need to get going on a solo cycle again".

Thomas Ruyant: “I will not be at the start of the next Route du Rhum”
My disappointment is immense. This race holds a special place in my history. I have competed in it and won it twice. As the defending champion, I was obviously very keen to come back and defend that victory.
