ALEIX GELABERT: MASTER OF THE SEAS PORTRAIT

Spanish-born Aleix Gelabert from Blanes inGirona to the north of Barcelona started sailing as a child aboard his father’s cruising boat, and once he started sailing school he just never stopped. Before starting ocean racing in 2008, 37 year-old Aleix sailed on dinghies, in the 49er class and on cruising boats like the J80, and he raced the Copa del Rey several times.
But when he lined-up for the Mini Transat in 2008 and got the taste for ocean racing, he was hooked. Aleix joined the Gaes IMOCA 60 shore team in 2010 with the all-female sailing duo Anna Corbella and Dee Caffari in the Barcelona World Race, and was part of the Round Spain Race sailing crew that year. So in 2014, when he got the chance join the One Ocean One Planet IMOCA 60 team as skipper alongside Didac Costa on the Barcelona World Race 2014/15, Aleix jumped at the opportunity.
